Believable and poignant. The author reminds me of clients I have treated in the past (I have a master's degree in social work). However, she is more insightful and curious than most.

CPTSD makes most people both hyperalert and at the same time unwilling to accept what they are sensing-- a terribly stressful attempt at self-protection. That's the source of the I must be crazy response. It's like they are gaslighting themselves.

Trauma memories are stored in the hippocampus and processed through the amygdala. Thats why she could feel the trauma without the actual memories. The haunting was triggering her over and over until it seems as if the constant exposure blunted the trauma response. She did feel stronger because the haunting pulled the memory of the trauma up to her consciousness over and over until her cns was no longer activated.

Her CPTSD did not cause the paranormal activity. She lived in a haunted house that kept triggering her. I would not support her continued residence in that house however because at some point the stress and lack of sleep will probably cause depression and anxiety that will deplete her natural amazing resilience. Also, her poor pets are very unhappy. Btw I too lived in a haunted house and am glad I was able to move out when I did since these things seem to only get worse over time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very personal account. Refreshing

Her theory on persons with PTSD having higher frequency of paranormal experiences is very interesting. This book I would say is a solid case supporting her theory.

Her steady disbelief on what was going on in her house is at times beyond belief. Being skeptical is I think a good thing but I think she takes it to nearly absurd levels. Still, that is just my opinion.

I agree with her critique of the slew of paranormal television shows being ridiculous. Her story seems refreshing in comparison. I have a tendency to believe her.

I admit, I like to be terrified by “true” accounts of the supernatural and this is not written to simply terrify the reader. Still there are some things here that really stuck with me. Freaky and truly frightening.

Yeah, it’s heavy on PTSD flashbacks, thus the title. She undoubtedly endured such criminally psychotic abuse that it’s truly amazing she is still alive.

I would recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this book. This one is the real deal. I do think there is a connection to PTSD and the paranormal. I
saw similarities to this and "The People in the Attic". Scary....thought provoking....and makes one re-think the paranormal is much more complex than is often presented. Look forward to the sequel and am planning on purchasing the DVD.
The clips I saw were scarier than hell! I think I'll watch the DVD with the lights on!

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read

This was more of a therapeutic book for people with PTSD than a book about the paranormal. The author was very descriptive in the telling of her story which included her past trauma that may have played a part in her paranormal encounters. While it was a good story and well written it hit a crescendo and then just maintained throughout the book. There were not major high points or a wrap up in the end. It gave me the impression that the author was using the writing process to better understand her circumstances, to vent, and to heal. A good book for PTSD folks and people who want a more positive paranormal experience. Not a scary book whatsoever.

It was an ok read. Interesting author. A good writer with good storytelling but at times somewhat repetitive. There were some huge gaps left out: 1 Who or what is adam? Was he a person who passed on the property or buried there? 2 What is the history of the house/property? It was mentioned the home was new but it had old out buildings. Was the new house built on the site of an older home? 3 the two children: had kids died of hypothermia there? 4 Was this place haunted because of the ptsd or was it an actual haunting. It wavered between the two answers without a definitive answer. 5 a main evidence cited is orb photography. Was there any other photographic evidence other than orbs?

I grew up in a haunted house, and I have PTSD, just like Mrs. Mathews. For the first time in all these years, I made the connection between the two things, including the root cause. I wouldn't wish these experiences on anyone, but I'm grateful that she risked ridicule and disbelief by writing this book. It's a good read just on its own merits, well written and with the ring of truth. But for those of us who've lived in this situation, it may be the only validation we'll ever get: someone else knows what we went through.

Author June Mathews has shown courage and vulnerability writing about a controversial topic - the paranormal. Not only does she describe the 'hauntings', she also gives us a detailed inside look to her own strugles and conflicts in coping with the paranormal. Additionlly, she has attempted to understand the paranormal in the context of her own trauma, thereby eliminating the sensationalism and catastrophic thoughts we ascribe to paranormal experiences.

I could feel in the writing that this was a hard story to "share" with the public but "Bravo." This is what a real haunting can be like. Great story, Great writing!

First of all, I have always enjoyed books about real haunted houses. So on that front alone this is a good read. There were so many occurrences in the house that I ask myself if I could stay or if sheer terror would drive me out. But the theory that CPTSD could be related to one's experience of paranormal phenomena is a new one to me. I find it fascinating. This is the kind of book that I want to read a second time. I look forward to The Meeting Place.

I really enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put down. It's a fresh take on the typically ubiquitous haunted house story and isn't scary, but rather, is positive, enlightening, and not overly dramatized. Being able to watch the DVD and actually SEE what's being described in the book is really fun and helps brings the story to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars: The Reliving: A True Story by June Mathews.

December 15, 2016

Format: Paperback

A true story through the eyes of a woman whose experiences in life led to a collision with the after life. To not fear and learn more about what we don't understand is in itself commendable and brave. To share the horrors of the past and intrigue of the present is to be admired and shared. This book explores the unexplained, the horrors of reality and fear, the true identities of the people for whom you thought you knew, the delight in pure friendships and unequivocally the energy reaction to things we don't understand by either ourselves or others. The book is wonderful and exciting! Sandra Horsley

5.0 out of 5 stars: I believe!

I grew up in a christian home and always believed in the supernatural. Didn't Jesus walk on water, turn water into wine, and feed 5 thousand with a few fish and a couples loaves of bread? I loved your retelling of your experiences in your new home and you made me feel like I was right there experiencing with you. Although I do know their are evil spirits, there are also good ones. I believe that some people that have had traumatizing experiences in their childhood sometimes are able to disassociate from that event. Its an amazing and smart way the brain keeps itself from going crazy. The brain creates the ability for the core personality to put up an amnesic wall and let another part of the brain create a personality to take the trauma. The reliving of the traumatic event is called an abreaction, and with the help of an experienced counselor in D.I.D., the person can be guided back to the memory where they can remember the event and integrate the fractured part of their personality that took the pain. This allows the person to integrate, and never have to physically experience that one event again, although they will now have total recall and healing. I also think that those that have had trauma severe enough, somehow are more sensitive to the spirit world. I also think God is loving and merciful and allows those that have been hurt so awfully to experience angelic encounters. I am looking forword to sharing in the experiences of June's next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars  You might want to look up, Ley Lines. There maybe a link.

kathy on June 2, 2017

Have you heard of Ley Lines? They're magnetic line that circle our planet. They have found that along those lines paranormal experience occur. Like the Bermuda Triangle. Many pilots have reported they're electronics go hey wire. Power can go off and on. Sound familiar? I think you might want to look and see if your property runs through one. They have maps online. I could only find a free one at .gov site, but it's too confusing to read. there better maps but you have to pay for them. Maybe you tube has them. My mom passed away two years ago, I was sitting in my car in front of a store with my mom's dog in my lap. First thing I noticed the dog, who usually barks as people go by became very quiet and was staring at the stores electronic doors. Then I saw the doors were opening and closing by themselves. Then they started to only partly open and close. It was like someone was goofing around with them. I could see no one there. I think it was my mom. It's something she would do, I can even think of her giggling. So I wonder if your home is a gateway between realms. I'm an electronic technician and I can see how that adds up. As I read of some of your experiences I knew the spirits were using them to get your attention. Tell your husband that electronics don't normally behave that way. If they go off and don't come on and you know they have an energy source< it's broke. But what you describe is fluctuating power. I know they seem to be off but I bet it's just very low voltage where it appears off. If it comes back on your bulb or whatever is not broke. So he can stop replacing everything. Know with that said, magnetic fluctuations can cause these disturbances. I think that's how the spirits can mess with them. I usually wouldn't leave a review but not only did I liked your book very much, I'm also indebted to you. You've helped me so much. It's funny how my E-Book Reader chose your book for me. I too had a rough and scary start in life. Mom kicked me out of house when I was 15 and pregnant. She never bothered to check on my where about, so I just did what I pleased. She too was an alcoholic and drug addict. Because I was out on my own I was subject to a lot of abuse. What really floored me was that horrific rape you endured, was so similar to what happened to me. I just got goose bumps writing that. I too only remember getting in a red truck that had three biker type guys in it. Them stopping out in the woods, getting out to drink some beers, of course I was scared to death. I remember them pulling me out of the truck and throwing me around like a rag doll then one of them slammed me against the tree and put his you know what in my mouth. Next thing I remember was waking up alone, naked and very dirty. Like you it hurt to get up and move. I got dressed minus a shoe I couldn't find. I don't recall how long I walked but I finally made to a road. Luckily an old man pulled over and took me to a gas station to clean up and then drove home. When I saw myself in the mirror, like you I looked dead. I also had blood all over me mixed with the dirt but when I showered I couldn't find a source to cause bleeding. I'm crying right now but I think it's maybe a healing cry. Like you when ever I was getting raped or beaten I made my mind leave my body. I never got any therapy I'm 58 yrs old now. Because off your book I now know that it'll be ok for me to seek out therapy. I used to be afraid they might make me remember things I didn't want to. Now I know they don't have to. I'm now hoping someone can help me to stop reliving the past. I did meet my Husband in 1981, married 1986 to 2012. Like you it was a good marriage. until it wasn't. I had to move out because he wouldn't. Now I'm once again out on my own and the reliving was pretty bad for awhile. I'm very afraid even though I put in a security system. I live in old duplex not in best area. I can't get my own home until divorce is finally settled. Yes 5 years now. He is fighting me on everything. Why am I telling you this because I want you to know I've already been attacked.. Your marriage seems very solid and I pray it stays that way for ever. I don't know how old you are but I've met many women who also had good marriages until they got into their 50's. Some men want just want a newer model. I'm now pretty much stuck in my house only going out if I have to. I can't even walk my dogs. I wish my landlady would let me have a big dog. I can't walk my two dogs because that's how a man followed me home and beat me up and kicked my one dog in the head causing her eye to bulge out. Sad thing I was in such shock I didn't notice for 4 days. Wow that was good to get that off my chest. Sorry about all that, I just wanted to let you know they're other women and men that also have these things happen. Why some of us are targets for evil I can't figure out. I agree with those who tell you and you also know that some of these entities are trying to help you heal. Sounds like they have done a good job. Hope your always safe and are still as happy as you were at the end of your book. Thanks again for giving me hope. Kathy

This book was a good read. Kept me on the edge and I didn't want to put it down. I love this kind of stuff anyway! I kept wondering what was going to happen next. I don't know if I would recommend reading it before bedtime though. I had to put it away when I was home alone because I kept hearing noises and it drove me crazy. Funny how things play on your mind. I love ghost stories and real life experiences, and this was nicely done. It had enough details to feel involved but also kept the story moving. The story itself deserves 5 stars, but my only complain is the editing. This book could've really done with an editor's help as there are countless grammatical and formatting errors throughout that can break up the reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars: Worth the read By Amy Milwaukee on April 27, 2017

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase

This book was very interesting. I would say that most people who would experience the level of activity in this home that these people have, would have been gone within a week, if that- and I would guess that the reason they got the house for less money than it was really worth was for the same reason- the people left and just wanted to be rid of it. From the day they moved in and walked into what they did- I don't think that was neighborhood kids who did that to the interior. Some of the things I suppose a person could deal with, like the doors opening and closing on their own, but the voices, the night time activity, the things that happened in the bathroom...no! I'm not sure why nothing was done to try and clear out some of the activity/spirits, maybe there isn't a way to do it if indeed there is a portal there. I would love to sit and talk with the author. It's their choice to live with it, I just hope that when the time comes that they want to sell it, they will make clear to the realtor and any potential buyers what they will have to endure.
